Johan Ferreira - Hoof van Sielkundige - en Terapeutiese Dienste / Head of Psychological and Therapeutic Services

SIELKUNDIGE / PSYCHOLOGIST

(Scroll down for English)

Johan Ferreira qualified as a Psychologist at the University of Stellenbosch and practised at the Air Force Base Ysterplaat in Cape Town for seven years.  In his capacity as Senior Psychologist and Head of the medical clinic the foundation was laid for his approach to multi-professional treatment.  His Master's degree thesis was based on a four year research project on seasonal depression.  The diagnosing and treatment of depression remains one of the focus areas in his practice.

Johan has been a Psychologist in private practice in Johannesburg since 1997 and since August 2005 his practice is located exclusively at the Wholeness Centre @ Mosaiek.  As head of psychological and therapeutic services at Wholeness @ Mosaiek he is mainly busy with therapeutic sessions, but is also responsible for supervision of psychologists, intern-psychologists and counselors.  He is involved in the development and presentation of workshops and is a lecturer at the Mosaiek Academy in Pastoral Care.

His frustration with the practice of maimstream psychology, where spirituality is excluded, motivated him to complete three subjects on the Honnours level at the Theology Department of the University of North West, in order to be admitted to a Ph.D in Practical Theology.  The title of his Ph.D is: Practical Wisdom as an Executive Virtue for Positive Psychology: A Pastoral-Theological Evaluation.  His research focusses on practical wisdom in every day life.  Hope, a clearly defined sense of future, aids in the process to identify a future vision, which will direct the individual towards authentic happiness.  These three constructs inspire Johan to find Biblical parallels and to apply these in a responsible and psychologically correct way in psychotherapy.

His therapeutic approach is aimed at aiding the individual to develop full and optimal human functioning.  The correct clinical diagnosis is followed by the process of rectifying the problem.  The attainment of normalized behaviour and emotional respons to life is then refelcted in an effective lifestyle.

Johan believes that healthy marriages are the primary foundation for a healthy community.  Relationship therapy is therefore a further focus area in his practice.  During the process of therapy all the aspects of the person and the relationship is addressed, the physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual dimensions that play a role in the optimal and preventative functioning of the person.

He has been a memeber of Mosaiek since 1999 and identifies with the intent of the goals and leadership of Mosaiek.

Johan is a member of the following professional organizations: Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), Psychological Association of South Africa (PSYSSA), American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC) and the International Association of Positive Psychology (IPPA).  He attends the world conference of AACC every second year to stay abreast with current development in christian counseling.  He was invited by IPPA and attended the First World Conference in Positive Psychology in Philadelphia, USA in June 2009, where he presented his research and counseling model.

Johan is married to Christine, a magazine editor.  They live in Craighall, Johannesburg, with their two teenage sons.
