Given the current state of our economy, more and more families are being confronted with poverty. For many vulnerable families who do not have adequate shelter or live in shacks winteris a time of hardship.
The Initiative
Rather than simply collecting clothing, “Children of the winter” forms part of a skills training community project empowering jobless mothers and benefiting 500 underprivileged children.
This initiative creates work for 40 jobless mothers by teaching them the neccessary knitting and crocheting skills. By instilling ownership we create a sense of pride and motivation. All the mothers are very conscientious of their work and how it affects their community.
Embark Foundation supplies West Rand Christian Centre with enough wool to knit 500 jerseys. Each mother receives an incentive for each jersey knitted. Of these jerseys 200 will be donated to the Golang at Emthonjeni Community Centre in Zandspruit Informal Settlement; 100 will go to Kwagggafontein and 200 to Dieplsoot Informal Settlement .
The solution
With adonation of R50 per jersey, you can help a child keep warm this winter.
