Emthonjeni: Bakery project success story of Salom

Salom was not only a student at Zandspruit Women's Baking School in 2010, but she was our first domestic worker and my first helper in my own small baking bussiness 2 years ago.

We found Salom "per chance" and employed her in 2009 as our domestic worker. Little did I know that 6 months later I would start my own baking bussiness and Salom would show a great interest and reveal that her first passion is baking!!! Soon she ended up helping me bake any and everything from cakes to muffins and quiches for my own baking bussiness and especially my then new "Goods of Grace" brand that was meant to be baked by ladies like her and thus empower and uplift them and to contribute to charity organisations, (a sort of "charity brand" still a dream and now all I bake anymore on the side) (see more on the current blog http://www.goodsofgrace.blogspot.com/) ...

And it is actually with her that the dream of "A Baking School" for ladies like her who would love to bake for a living started coming to life. Soon after that I quit my own baking bussiness and started running the Baking Project at Emthonjeni and Salome enrolled with the other ladies.

Salom with me at the new Emthonjeni Baking Project in 2010

Thus Salom received personal one-on-one training from me and then aslo completed the whole of the practical side of the Baking Course in 2010. Due to going on maternity leave and going home for that time she missed out on the theory in the last 2 months of 2010 BUT her practical skills learnt in her 2 years with us has proofed to be enough...our volunteer Bec saw an add for a baker needed at a Doppio Zero in Pretoria and Salom got an interview with them AND she got the job - she is now working at the "Doppio Zero's" Bakery  in Pretoria!!!

She just started a week ago and she is thrilled! She could not stop rambling about all the wonderful things she has learned to bake and baked herself in this week! It is a dream come true to her! And for us! Everything just fell in place - they were willing to employ her based on her baking certificate from 2010 and our reference and to build on what she knows and teach her what she doesn't! She was even assisted by her new fellow employees to find a place to stay close-by in Pretoria and they referred her to a perfect creche for her new baby boy!!!  It's all I believe God's favor!!! We knew since her passion for baking came to light that God had a better life an plans for her and my greatest wish was that we could help make that possible for her!!!
